Annual Conference
The NIH just released a summary statement on the 2007 conference titled: CAM at the NIH: Focus on Complementary and Alternative Medicine."Just over 10 years ago, an NIH Consensus Development Conference assessed acupuncture's effectiveness in treating various diseases and conditions. What has happened in the field of acupuncture research since that conference and its later report (called a consensus statement)? What areas will be important in future research?

Research Highlight
The latest research article is titled: Components of placebo effect: randomised controlled trial in patients with irritable bowel syndrome. This article, co-authored by current SAR co-president Rosa Schnyer, investigates whether the placebo effects of sham acupuncture can be separated into three components 1) assessment and observation, 2) a therapeutic ritual, and 3) a supportive patient-practitioner relationship. The authors conclude that not only are there 3 distinct facets to sham acupuncture treatments, these aspects can be combined to reflect a graded dose response. Furthermore, these "Non-specific effects can produce statistically and clinically significant outcomes." Abstract link
